India’s steelmaker giant JSW Group forays into defence sector

JSW Defence and Aerospace: India’s steel maker giant JSW Group has entered into the country’s growing defence manufacturing space which has seen a large number of lucrative defence contracts awarded to private and state owned defence companies since the launch of ambitious self-reliant India programme (Atm Nirbhar Bharat) initiated by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government in 2020 to reduce the country’s dependence on imports in critical sector, including defence sector.

India formally inducts Airbus C-295 MW transport aircraft in IAF fleet

Indian Air Force C-295 MW Aicraft: India’s defence minister Rajnath Singh Monday formally inducted a new medium transport aircraft manufactured by the European defence company Airbus Defence and Space into the service of Indian Air Force. This is first of the 56 Airbus C-295 MW aircraft on order by India. While 16 aircraft will be delivered to India in the flyaway condition, a joint consortium of Airbus and India’s Tata Group will manufacture remaining 40 C-295 MW aircraft in Vadodara in western state of Gujarat.

MoD clears first military drone testing centre in South India

India’s first military drone testing centre in Tamil Nadu: India’s ministry of defence has the country’s first ever testing centre for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAVs) under the Defence Testing Infrastructure Scheme (DTIS) will be established on five acres of land at Vallam Vadagal in Kancheepuram district in southern state of Tamil Nadu. The Rs 50 crore ($6 million) facility was granted approval by the Ministry of Defence after a bid was submitted by Keltron-led consortium in collaboration with Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO).

Controp Precision Technologies, Paras Defence and Space form JV company: Israel based Controp has partnered with India’s Paras Defence and Space Technologies which is in the business of offering electro-optical and infra-red based solutions to defence customers. Paras is a publicly traded company in the National Stock Exchange (NSE) in Mumbai, India.

Pratt & Whitney opens India Engineering Center

Pratt & Whitney’s India Engineering Center: US aircraft engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney Thursday officially opened its new India Engineering Center (IEC) in the country’s IT capital Bengaluru, located in the southern part of the country. The facility is co-located with Pratt & Whitney’s India Capabilities Center (ICC), which opened in 2022 to provide integrated global supply chain support, and the recently inaugurated Collins Aerospace engineering and global operations centers.

Indian Army inducts DRDO’s short span bridge system

DRDO Short Span Bridge: The first production lot of 12 Short Span Bridging System (SSBS)-10 meter, designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), has been inducted into the Indian Army by Army Chief General MM Naravane during a ceremony held at Cariappa Parade Ground in Delhi.

Rheinmetall Executive Board: The supervisory board of the Düsseldorf-based technology group has extended the contract of executive board Chairman Armin Papperger by five years to 31 December 2026. “Rheinmetall AG remains under tried-and-tested leadership,” the German defence technology giant said on Thursday.

L&T begins delivery of last K-9 Vajra-T guns to Indian Army

India’s defence and engineering major Larsen & Toubro Tuesday delivered the 81st K-9 Vajra-T howitzer gun to the Indian Army. With this delivery, L&T Defence is on track to deliver all 100 guns within the delivery schedule of 42 months as permitted under the relaxed criteria following the outbreak of Covid-19 global pandemic that hit the defence industry like any other sector of the economy.

Make in India: Dedicated defence indigenisation portal SRIJAN launched

In its bid to make India truly self-reliant in defence production, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government Friday launched a dedicated defence production portal called Srijan (creation), as a single source for all the information related to defence equipment that can be taken under the government’s indigenisation drive under self-reliant India mission (Atma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan).
