Skyroot’s Vikram-1 Rocket Launch: SRIHARIKOTA, INDIA — In a landmark achievement that signals the dawn of a new era for India’s commercial space sector, Hyderabad-based space startup Skyroot Aerospace successfully launched its Vikram-1 rocket into orbit yesterday, July 18, 2026.
The mission, aptly named “Aagaman” (Sanskrit for “Arrival”), lifted off from the First Launch Pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota at 12:05 p.m. IST. By successfully deploying its payloads into a 450-km Low Earth Orbit (LEO) on its very first attempt, Skyroot has made India only the third nation in the world—joining the United States and China—to possess private orbital launch capability.
A Defining Moment for ‘Atmanirbhar’ Space

The success of the mission drew immediate praise from the highest levels of government. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to the Skyroot team following the confirmation of orbital injection, lauding the achievement as a pivotal step in India’s space journey.
“This is a defining moment in India’s space journey. The growing participation of our private sector is opening new frontiers and accelerating innovation. This achievement will encourage countless youngsters to dream bigger and innovate fearlessly,” Prime Minister Modi stated.
The Prime Minister also took to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to celebrate the milestone, noting that the rocket carried a handwritten “Vande Mataram” postcard from him alongside various technology demonstration payloads.
Engineering a First-Try Success
Achieving orbit on a maiden flight is a notoriously difficult feat in aerospace engineering. While global giants like SpaceX required multiple failed attempts before reaching orbit, Skyroot Aerospace bypassed this “learning curve” with meticulous design and testing.
Key specifications of the Vikram-1 mission include:
Rocket Architecture: A 24-meter, four-stage launch vehicle featuring an all-carbon-composite airframe to minimize structural mass.
Propulsion: The first three stages utilize solid-fuel motors (Kalam-1200, Kalam-250, and Kalam-100), while the fourth stage features a 3D-printed liquid propulsion “Orbital Adjustment Module” capable of precise maneuvers in space.
Capacity: Designed to carry up to 350 kg of payload to LEO.
The “Aagaman” mission successfully deployed multiple satellites, including the SCOPE and Grahaa satellites, as well as experimental technology demonstrators from partners like Germany’s DCUBED and the Indian firm Cosmoserve Space.

A Youth-Led Revolution
Founded in 2018 by former ISRO engineers Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka, Skyroot Aerospace has quickly become the poster child for India’s 2020 space-sector reforms.
Highlighting the unique culture behind the company, CEO Pawan Chandana revealed to the Prime Minister that the average age of the team members responsible for the mission is just 28 years.
“By executing the nation’s first fully private orbital flight, Skyroot has shattered legacy boundaries, demonstrating that our domestic industry is primed to handle end-to-end space missions,” said Lt. Gen. AK Bhatt (Retd), Director General of the Indian Space Association.
With this successful “Arrival,” Skyroot Aerospace is now positioned to provide affordable, on-demand launch services to the global satellite market, cementing India’s growing influence in the commercial space economy.
