Olee.space, an Indian advanced photonics and defence technology company, has been chosen as the Development-cum-Production Partner (DCPP) for a strategic INR 70 crore (roughly US$7.4 million) Advanced Photonics Development Programme launched by the Government of India.
The initiative is designed to run over a 24-month period. It outlines a structured pathway that covers multiple stages of production, ranging from initial research and technology development to engineering, fabrication, system integration, testing, validation, and ultimate production readiness. The timeline relies heavily on milestone-based development and formal acceptance stages to track progress.
For the company, this nomination marks an important transition. It moves their focus from advanced photonics research and development toward practical engineering, system integration, and the manufacturing of strategic optical systems. On a wider scale, the project highlights how photonics is increasingly viewed as a foundational technology for future communications, aerospace systems, industrial applications, advanced manufacturing, and strategic infrastructure.
Exploring Future Applications and Architecture
Speaking on the potential of the field, James Solomon, CEO of Olee.space, stated: “We believe the core photonics is far more exciting and to be discovered. We have struck the first rock; we would be the one mining it economically.”
The company aims to expand upon these initial findings as the project progresses. Addressing the broad utility of the technology, James Solomon added: “The applications are endless, we have presented 15 already and we would build further in shared photonics architecture.”
