Bengaluru Space Expo BSX India 2026: India’s space industry is gathering in Bengaluru this week as the ninth edition of the Bengaluru Space Expo (BSX) brings together government agencies, established aerospace companies, start-ups, investors, researchers and international participants around a rapidly changing question: how far can India take the commercialisation of space?

The three-day event is being held from 7 to 9 September at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre. While the exhibition opened on Monday, 7 September, Tuesday’s programme, on 8 September, has placed particular emphasis on private industry, regulation, human spaceflight, emerging technologies and the next stage of India’s space economy.

The event comes at an important moment for India’s space programme. The country is trying to move from a system dominated by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) towards a broader ecosystem in which private companies design satellites, build rockets, provide space-based data and develop technologies for missions that were once almost entirely the preserve of the government.

That transformation is visible on the BSX exhibition floor — and also in the debates taking place around it.

What is happening at BSX 2026?

BSX 2026 is being organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in partnership with ISRO, the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) and NewSpace India Limited (NSIL).

The organisers describe this year’s theme as “Harnessing Space for Global Progress: Innovation, Policy, and Growth”.

The scale of the event reflects the expanding commercial ambitions of the Indian space sector. The organisers expect about 250 exhibitors, 12,000 business visitors, 1,000 conference delegates and participation from 20 countries. There are also country pavilions and dedicated spaces for Indian start-ups and innovation.

The conference programme covers almost the entire space value chain, from Earth observation and satellite communications to launch vehicles, human spaceflight, deep-space exploration, space sustainability and financing.

Tuesday’s programme has been particularly focused on the commercial future of the sector. Sessions have addressed the movement from Earth observation towards commercial intelligence, regulatory reforms, human spaceflight and deep-space exploration, greener launch systems, artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.

A dedicated session is also examining how India can use collaboration between industry, academia and government — a model often described as the “triple helix” — to accelerate the NewSpace economy.

Among the notable speakers is ISRO chairman V Narayanan. Indian astronaut Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla is also scheduled to address the conference, while the programme brings together officials from ISRO, IN-SPACe, the government and industry.

The third day will broaden the international dimension further, with sessions involving Japan, Australia and other global partners. The programme also features a discussion involving former NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, Indian astronaut Group Captain Angad Pratap and Tom Shelley.

The private companies changing India’s space industry

The most significant story behind BSX is arguably not the exhibition itself but the changing composition of India’s space industry.

For decades, India’s space programme was overwhelmingly government-led. ISRO developed launch vehicles, built satellites and operated major missions, while private companies largely functioned as suppliers.

That model is now changing.

Since the government’s decision in 2020 to open the space sector to private participation, hundreds of space-tech companies have emerged. Industry estimates put the number of Indian space start-ups and companies at more than 300, with some estimates now exceeding 400. Their activities range from rockets and satellite manufacturing to Earth observation, propulsion, space situational awareness and data analytics.

Companies such as Skyroot Aerospace and Agnikul Cosmos are developing private launch vehicles. Pixxel has built a business around hyperspectral Earth observation, while firms such as Digantara, Bellatrix Aerospace, Dhruva Space and GalaxEye are working in areas including space situational awareness, propulsion, satellite systems and Earth intelligence.

The momentum was underlined just before BSX by two significant developments.

Indian Earth-imaging start-up GalaxEye announced that it had secured a US patent for technology combining optical and radar sensing, potentially allowing satellites to capture useful imagery regardless of darkness or weather conditions.

At the same time, Pixxel raised $100 million in its latest funding round — described as the largest funding round for an Indian space-tech company — taking its total funding to $195 million. The company is expanding its satellite constellation and its Earth-intelligence software platform.

Those developments illustrate what policymakers want the private sector to become: not simply contractors building components for ISRO, but companies capable of developing globally competitive technologies and selling space-based services.

Why IN-SPACe matters

A central institution in this transformation is IN-SPACe.

Created to facilitate greater private-sector participation, the organisation acts as an interface between the government and private companies seeking to enter India’s space industry. It has a role in authorisation, enabling access to infrastructure and encouraging technology and capability development.

The distinction is important because opening space to private companies requires more than simply allowing businesses to build rockets.

Companies need regulatory certainty, access to testing facilities, launch infrastructure, technical expertise, government data and customers. They also need capital — particularly because space businesses can take years and substantial investment to move from a prototype to a commercially viable product.

BSX is therefore as much a business and policy gathering as it is a technology exhibition. Its programme specifically focuses on regulation, financing, industrial partnerships and the development of manufacturing clusters.

India wants a much larger space economy

The economic ambition behind these reforms is substantial.

BSX organisers put India’s current space economy at about $8.4 billion, representing roughly 2-3% of the global market. They cite an Indian target of expanding the sector to about $44 billion by 2033, including significant export opportunities.

The objective is not merely to launch more Indian rockets.

A larger space economy would include satellite communications, navigation, Earth observation, space-based defence applications, climate monitoring, disaster management, agriculture, logistics and financial services built around satellite data.

That creates a potentially much larger commercial market than launch services alone.

But the transition is not without tensions

The rapid expansion of private participation has also raised questions inside ISRO.

Just days before BSX, employee organisations within ISRO sought greater clarity over the government’s plans to transfer some manufacturing and operational activities to industry. The concerns reflect anxiety about what a more commercially oriented space sector means for the role of India’s public space agency.

ISRO has moved to reassure its employees and the wider public that the organisation itself will not be privatised.

The agency says it will remain responsible for advanced space research and technology development, strategic missions, space science, exploration and critical and frontier capabilities. IN-SPACe chairman Pawan Goenka has similarly argued that the reforms are intended to expand India’s overall space ecosystem rather than diminish ISRO.

That distinction is central to understanding India’s model.

The government is not simply replacing ISRO with private companies. Instead, it is attempting to divide responsibilities differently: ISRO can concentrate more heavily on research, exploration, strategic capabilities and technologies that may not yet have an obvious commercial market, while industry increasingly takes on manufacturing and commercially viable operational activities.

A consortium involving Hindustan Aeronautics and Larsen & Toubro, for example, is now producing the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, while technology for the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle has been transferred to HAL.

Bengaluru becomes a showcase for the next phase

That makes this year’s Bengaluru Space Expo particularly timely.

India’s space programme has already demonstrated that it can reach the Moon, Mars and the Sun, build sophisticated launch vehicles and execute complex missions at comparatively low cost.

The next challenge is economic: can those capabilities generate a large, internationally competitive space industry?

The companies and institutions represented at BSX suggest that the answer is beginning to emerge.

The exhibition brings together the traditional pillars of India’s space programme — ISRO, government agencies and established aerospace manufacturers — with a new generation of start-ups seeking private capital, commercial customers and global markets.

The result is a space sector in transition.

For India, the ambition is no longer simply to be a successful spacefaring nation. It is to become a significant space economy — one capable of designing, manufacturing, launching and operating commercial space systems at scale.

BSX 2026 offers a snapshot of that transformation: rockets beside satellites, government agencies alongside start-ups, and engineers and investors debating not just India’s next mission, but who will build the businesses that take Indian space technology into the global market.
