Fincantieri and Saildrone Partner on High-Speed Autonomous Warship Programme: Fincantieri has announced plans to construct a new class of high-speed unmanned surface vessel (USV), named Spectre, as part of a collaboration with Saildrone. The programme will be delivered through Fincantieri’s US subsidiary, Fincantieri Marine Group, and marks a further step in the company’s expansion into autonomous naval systems.
The announcement was made during the Sea-Air-Space exhibition hosted by the Navy League of the United States in National Harbor, Maryland.
New vessel designed for evolving naval operations
Spectre has been developed to meet changing operational requirements among modern naval forces, particularly the need for scalable, autonomous platforms that can be deployed in large numbers. The vessel is intended for multi-mission use, with a focus on anti-submarine warfare while remaining adaptable for other operational roles.
At approximately 52 metres in length and with a displacement of around 250 tonnes, Spectre is the largest platform developed by Saildrone to date. It is designed to reach speeds of up to 30 knots and features a low acoustic signature, which is considered important for underwater detection missions.

Industrial production in Wisconsin shipyards
Construction of the vessels will take place across Fincantieri’s shipyards in Wisconsin, using existing infrastructure and workforce capabilities. The programme builds on the company’s experience in serial production of aluminium vessels, applying industrial manufacturing processes to an autonomous naval platform.
The approach is intended to support consistent production output and faster delivery timelines, reflecting growing demand for reliable and scalable unmanned systems.

Strategic push into autonomous naval systems
The collaboration with Saildrone forms part of Fincantieri’s broader strategy to integrate unmanned technologies into its defence portfolio. By combining Saildrone’s operational experience in autonomous vessels with Fincantieri’s manufacturing capacity, the companies aim to deliver deployable systems at scale.
Pierroberto Folgiero, chief executive of Fincantieri, said the project represents a shift in the company’s role within the defence sector, moving beyond traditional shipbuilding towards system-level integration for future naval forces.

The programme also reinforces Fincantieri’s long-standing industrial presence in the United States. The company stated that the initiative aligns with domestic production requirements while contributing to the operational readiness of the US Navy and allied maritime forces.
Spectre is being designed to integrate a range of mission systems and payloads, allowing it to adapt to evolving operational needs and threat environments. This flexibility is seen as a key feature in modern naval planning, where platforms are expected to perform multiple roles over their lifecycle.
