Vice Admiral Vineet McCarty Andaman & Nicobar Command: PORT BLAIR — In a move that underscores India’s intensifying focus on its maritime frontiers and theater command capabilities, Vice Admiral eet McCarty McCarty has officially assumed charge as the Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman & Nicobar Command (CINCAN).

Taking the helm of India’s only fully operational Tri-Service Command, Vice Admiral McCarty steps into the role at a critical juncture for the Indo-Pacific region. Upon taking charge, the Admiral wasted no time in highlighting the profound strategic weight resting on the shoulders of the Andaman & Nicobar Command (ANC), emphasizing its pivotal role in safeguarding India’s maritime interests and ensuring long-term stability across the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

“The Andaman & Nicobar Command is a vital pillar of our national security architecture in the Indo-Pacific,” McCarty stated, reaffirming his immediate commitment to enhancing operational preparedness and fostering deeper jointness and synergy among the Army, Navy, and Air Force components.

A Career Forged at Sea

Vice Admiral McCarty’s ascension to one of the military’s most vital operational commands is backed by an illustrious career defined by extensive sea time and high-stakes command appointments.

He was part of the prestigious commissioning crew of the guided-missile destroyer INS Delhi, subsequently completing all his specialist appointments onboard the frontline vessel. His proven leadership at sea is reflected in his command of three distinct classes of naval ships:

  • The anti-submarine warfare corvette INS Ajay

  • The missile corvette INS Khanjar

  • The stealth frigate INS Shivalik

His operational grit is matched by an extensive portfolio of staff and training portfolios. He has previously shaped the Navy’s future leadership as the Training Commander at the Indian Naval Academy (INA) and directed strategic blueprints as the Command Plans Officer at Headquarters Eastern Naval Command and Commodore Naval Plans at Naval Headquarters.

The Rise to Flag Rank and Tri-Service Expertise

Following his promotion to Flag Rank in 2020, Vice Admiral McCarty transitioned into critical administrative and fleet leadership roles. He served with distinction as the Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Staff Requirements) and Controller of Personnel Services. In 2023, he took over the prestigious mantle of Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet (FOCWF), directing the sword arm of the Indian Navy during a period of heightened maritime vigil. Following this, in 2024, he returned to molding the next generation of officers as the tenth Commandant of the Indian Naval Academy.

What uniquely positions Vice Admiral McCarty to lead the ANC, however, is his recent and extensive exposure to tri-service architecture. Between 2025 and 2026, he held consecutive high-level appointments at the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS). Serving first as the Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (Policy, Plans and Force Development) and subsequently as the Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (Doctrine, Organisation and Training), he has been at the very center of India’s ongoing transition toward theaterization and joint military doctrine.

Global Outlook and the Indo-Pacific Horizon

In addition to his domestic credentials, McCarty brings a sharp diplomatic edge to the command. His overseas assignments include a stint as Directing Staff at the Naval and Maritime Academy in Sri Lanka, as well as a four-year tenure from 2011 to 2015 serving concurrently as the Defence Advisor to Singapore and the Philippines. This deep-seated familiarity with South and Southeast Asian maritime dynamics is expected to heavily influence his approach at the ANC.

As the geopolitical center of gravity continues to shift toward the Indo-Pacific, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands sit astride some of the world’s busiest shipping lanes and choke points. With Vice Admiral McCarty at the helm, New Delhi has signaled its intent to project strength, seamless inter-service cooperation, and a watchful eye over the strategic waters of the Indian Ocean.
