India-UK Defence Cooperation: India and the UK recently held a milestone diplomatic gathering in New Delhi: the 25th India-UK Defence Consultative Group (DCG) Meeting. Co-chaired by top defence officials from both nations, the talks brought together the Indian Defence Secretary and the UK’s Permanent Under Secretary for Defence, Jeremy Pocklington, who was visiting India in this official capacity for the very first time.

The core purpose of the meeting was to check the progress of ongoing military partnerships and map out how both countries can work more closely together to tackle modern security challenges.

Why the India-UK Defence Partnership Matters Now

While India and the UK have a long history of diplomatic relations, their modern defence partnership is shifting from a traditional buyer-seller dynamic into a deep, collaborative alliance. This meeting heavily emphasized joint Research and Development (R&D).

Through the lens of the India-UK Vision 2035 and the Ten-year Defence Industrial Roadmap, both governments are looking to co-develop and co-produce military technology. This means sharing cutting-edge innovations rather than just trading finished equipment, helping both nations build self-reliance and technological superiority.

Expanding Security Beyond Borders

Beyond technology and manufacturing, the two nations agreed to boost everyday military cooperation. This includes:

Joint Exercises and Training: Increasing regular drills between the armed forces to ensure smooth coordination during international missions or humanitarian crises.

Indo-Pacific Maritime Security: Acknowledging the strategic importance of keeping global trade routes open and secure. Key initiatives include setting up the Regional Maritime Security Centre of Excellence (RMSCE) under the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative.

Strategic Autonomy and Regional Peace: Exchanging candid assessments on global hotspots, reinforcing a shared belief in a rules-based international order, freedom of navigation, and mutual respect.

Building Personal and Institutional Bridges

Before sitting down for formal negotiations, Pocklington partook in important cultural and military diplomacy. He laid a wreath at the National War Memorial to honour fallen soldiers, visited the Gandhi Smriti Museum, toured the National Defence College in New Delhi, and held high-level discussions with the Chief of Defence Staff, General NS Raja Subramani.

Ultimately, this 25th meeting proved that the UK and India are eager to future-proof their alliance, ensuring that their decades-old partnership evolves to meet the dynamic security demands of the 21st century.
