Hanwha Defense USA’s K9 Mobile Howitizer wins US Army’s Tactical Canon Programme Prototype Order: WASHINGTON — Hanwha Defense USA has secured a competitive agreement from the U.S. Army to deliver prototype K9 Mobile Howitzers for the service branch’s Mobile Tactical Cannon program. The award covers an initial delivery of six prototype systems, with an option for an additional 12 units. This milestone marks the company’s first major primary contract directly with the U.S. ground forces.
The program focuses on accelerating modernization goals for long-range precision fires. With more than 2,500 variants of the K9 Howitzer family already fielded globally, the manufacturer enters the U.S. evaluation phase with an established weapon platform rather than an unproven concept.
Modernising Army Fires Through Rapid Prototyping
The Mobile Tactical Cannon program aims to identify a mobile, protected 155 mm artillery system capable of supplementing or replacing select towed assets like the M777 howitzer. Recent conflicts have demonstrated that towed artillery pieces are increasingly vulnerable to counter-battery fire and drone detection due to their slower relocation times.
By contrast, self-propelled wheeled howitzers offer enhanced tactical mobility, enabling crews to execute rapid “shoot and scoot” maneuvers. Under the terms of the agreement, soldiers will test and evaluate the K9 Mobile Howitzer prototypes in realistic operational environments to determine reliability, performance, and operational suitability.
Industrial Localisation and the Alabama Facility
To support the contract and build long-term capacity, Hanwha Defense USA is establishing a designated integration and test facility in Opelika, Alabama. The company has signed a multi-year lease for the Phase I site to anchor its domestic supply chain initiatives and bolster the American combat vehicle industrial base.
The localisation strategy seeks to transfer advanced manufacturing processes and industrial technology to the United States. While the initial phase focuses on local prototype integration—creating approximately 40 regional jobs—the broader framework is structured to establish a sustainable domestic manufacturing network capable of scaling if the platform transitions into full-scale production.

The K9 Mobile Howitzer operates as a wheeled variant of the combat-proven tracked K9 platform. Engineered for high tactical mobility, the system shares full compatibility with the U.S. Army‘s standard suite of 155 mm munitions.
Hanwha representatives note that the wheeled design provides an expansion path toward future operational requirements while maintaining structural margins for upcoming technology insertions. By pairing mature global technology with localized American manufacturing, Hanwha aims to align its platform with the U.S. Department of Defense‘s emphasis on rapid, scalable, and onshore supply chains.
