Rheinmetall PATH: German defence manufacturing company Rheinmetall has established a new Advanced Land Autonomy Centre of Excellence (ALACOE) in the United Kingdom. Located in the UK, the facility is designed to accelerate the delivery and integration of autonomous land systems for military applications, forming part of a broader international network spanning Europe, the United States, and Australia.
The initiative focuses on adapting defense technology for modern operational environments, where traditional communication lines and global positioning signals may be disrupted or contested.
The Technology Behind Rheinmetall PATH
At the core of the new centre’s operations is Rheinmetall PATH, an artificial intelligence-enabled autonomy kit developed by Rheinmetall Canada. The system is designed to provide perception, navigation, and decision-making capabilities without relying on standard GPS infrastructure.
The software is platform-agnostic, meaning it can be integrated into various wheeled and tracked military vehicles. According to company specifications, the technology has been demonstrated on more than 40 different platforms to perform tasks such as autonomous navigation, leader-follower convoy operations, and dynamic obstacle avoidance across harsh climates and complex terrain.
The maturity of the PATH system has previously been evaluated through multinational military trials and competitions, including NATO-linked experimentation exercises and the European Land Robot Trials (ELROB).

Industrial Cooperation and Transatlantic Supply Chains
The establishment of the UK centre is intended to strengthen industrial cooperation between the United Kingdom and Canada while supporting broader NATO readiness objectives. By localising the technology, Rheinmetall aims to integrate UK-based companies into its supply chain, fostering domestic engineering and technology employment.
At the same time, the project is structured to sustain advanced manufacturing production in Canada, where the underlying autonomy kit was developed. Leadership from both regions emphasized the economic and operational dimensions of the initiative. Rebecca Richards, Managing Director of Rheinmetall UK, noted that the facility reflects the growing need for agile land capabilities in response to complex threats. Pietro Mazzei, President and CEO of Rheinmetall Canada, stated that deploying Canadian expertise internationally helps accelerate technology delivery and enhance long-term industrial resilience across allied nations.
