Fincantieri REPMUS 2024: Portugal: Fincantieri, a global leader in shipbuilding, is once again participating in the REPMUS 2024 military exercise, showcasing its advanced unmanned systems technology. The company is collaborating with the Italian Navy, Graal Tech, and WSense to test cutting-edge solutions in a realistic maritime environment.

Fincantieri’s commitment to the underwater domain is evident through its participation in REPMUS, an annual event organized by the Portuguese Military Navy, NATO, and the European Defence Agency (EDA). The exercise brings together military forces, universities, and hi-tech companies to explore the potential of unmanned systems.

One of the key technologies being demonstrated by Fincantieri is the Multi Mission MUS Toolkit, a platform based on the SAND surface drone and the innovative Unmanned Management System (UMS). The Multi Mission MUS Toolkit is designed to enhance the efficiency of military operations by integrating seamlessly with both new and existing naval vessels.

The UMS, developed by Fincantieri NexTech’s Line of Business “Unmanned Management Systems & Underwater,” ensures autonomous operations through remote control stations. It leverages the expertise gained by IDS in remote control systems and features new technical and operational solutions that enhance vehicle autonomy and interoperability with NATO and national standards.

The SAND surface drone, a joint project between IDS, Effebi, and Meccano Engineering, is a versatile, reconfigurable vehicle capable of performing various missions, including research, rescue, environmental monitoring, and maritime safety. It has recently been integrated with the advanced Launch and Recovery System (LARS), further expanding its capabilities in areas such as mine countermeasures, anti-submarine warfare, and protection of critical seabed infrastructure.

In addition to its own technologies, Fincantieri is also demonstrating the UMS’s ability to serve as a communication gateway for coordinating different unmanned systems, including flying vehicles, surface drones, and submarines. This capability is crucial for enabling “virtual” ships, such as the European Multi Mission Fregates (FREMM) or the Multi-purpose High Patrols (PPA) of the Italian Military Navy, to effectively manage and coordinate unmanned operations.

Fincantieri’s participation in REPMUS 2024 underscores its commitment to technological innovation and its role in shaping the future of maritime operations. By showcasing its advanced unmanned systems, the company is demonstrating its ability to meet the evolving needs of the defense industry and contribute to the development of cutting-edge solutions for the underwater domain.
