Shielding Europe: Airbus and Diehl Defence Deepen Alliance to Scale Up Air and Missile Defense: BERLIN, Germany — In a major move to fortify European airspace amid evolving global security challenges, defense giants Airbus Defence and Space and Diehl Defence have officially signed a strategic agreement to intensify their cooperation in integrated air and missile defense (IAMD). Announced at the high-profile ILA Berlin Air Show 2026, the partnership aims to leverage the complementary technical strengths of both companies to deliver highly scalable, networked defense solutions for NATO and European allies.

The agreement marks a pivotal evolution in an already highly successful partnership. Airbus and Diehl have a long track record of collaboration in ground-based air defense (GBAD) systems, most notably through the IRIS-T SLM. This medium-range system has become a cornerstone of modern European air defense, protecting vital civilian infrastructure, government buildings, and high-value military targets from sophisticated airborne threats.

A Battle-Proven Foundation

Under their existing framework, the division of labor between the two defense leaders utilizes their specialized expertise. Airbus Defence and Space contributes its combat-proven Command and Control (C2) solutions, which offer a trusted, resilient architecture for battle management. Diehl Defence holds overall responsibility for the complete GBAD system, supplying the critical effectors, launchers, and missile technology.

The real-world efficacy of this combined architecture is not theoretical. The Integrated Battle Management System (IBMS), developed in close collaboration with the German Armed Forces, has seen extensive deployment in Ukraine within the IRIS-T SLM/SLS systems. Its performance under high-intensity combat conditions has validated the reliability and effectiveness of the joint solution, prompting a wave of procurement across the continent. To date, a growing list of European nations—including Germany, Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Slovenia, Sweden, and Switzerland—have adopted these GBAD systems to safeguard their territories.

Engineering the Future: The “Battle Lab” Concept

Looking ahead, the new agreement focuses on aggressive product enhancement, increased operational agility, and deeper system integration. One of the central pillars of the expanded cooperation is the proposed creation of a joint “battle lab” development environment. This collaborative space will allow engineers from both companies to rapidly simulate, test, and integrate next-generation C2 layers with Diehl’s field-proven effectors.

The ultimate objective is to anchor a resilient, fully networked defensive shield capable of seamlessly scaling to meet the stringent requirements of NATO and the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI). By creating an open, adaptable architecture, the partners want to ensure that European nations can easily upgrade their defense postures as electronic warfare, drone tech, and missile capabilities continue to advance.

Leadership Vision for European Security

Executives from both companies expressed immense confidence in the alliance’s potential to shape the geopolitical landscape of European defense.

“Airbus continues to shape the future of Integrated Air and Missile Defence by combining our battle-proven and NATO-certified Command and Control system with Diehl Defence’s equally proven IRIS-T SLS/SLM family,” said Michael Schoellhorn, CEO of Airbus Defence and Space. “This joint work is both the main enabler and the springboard for further expansion of the successful European Sky Shield Initiative, offering an open architecture for reliable and effective Air Defence solutions for existing and new customers.”

Helmut Rauch, CEO of Diehl Defence, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the collaborative momentum. “I am proud of our previous GBAD achievements with Airbus Defence and Space, and I am looking forward to taking this step further. I am convinced that we can provide intelligent and reliable solutions for our customers’ requirements in the field of Integrated Air and Missile Defence.”

As the ILA Berlin Air Show underscores the critical need for rapid military modernization, the Airbus-Diehl agreement signals a significant step toward a more unified, self-reliant, and technologically advanced European defense infrastructure.
