MBDA will setup MICA missile MRO facility in India: European missile manufacturer MBDA has announced a major agreement with the Indian Air Force to establish local Maintenance, Repair, and Mid-Life Overhaul (MRO) capabilities for the MICA air-to-air missile system in India, marking another significant step in the country’s push for defence self-reliance.
The agreement, announced on May 6, 2026, is expected to substantially enhance the operational readiness of the Indian Air Force’s frontline fighter fleet, particularly the Mirage-2000 and Rafale combat aircraft, both of which are equipped with the MICA missile family. The development also aligns closely with India’s broader strategic objective of strengthening indigenous defence sustainment capabilities under the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
Under the arrangement, the MRO facility will be established, operated, and maintained by the Indian Air Force, while MBDA will provide industrial equipment, specialised tools, technical documentation, training modules, and ongoing engineering support. The collaboration is aimed at ensuring long-term sustainment of the missile systems within India, reducing dependence on overseas servicing and significantly improving turnaround times for maintenance cycles.
New MRO facility expected to strengthen missile readiness
In its official statement, MBDA said the creation of local MRO infrastructure would foster long-term capability building within India’s defence ecosystem and help secure critical technical expertise for future generations of military personnel and engineers.
The company noted that the initiative reflects the core principles of the Atmanirbhar Bharat programme launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2020, which seeks to reduce India’s dependence on foreign defence imports and encourage domestic production, maintenance, and technological capability.
“Developing these facilities locally will foster long-term capability building, secure technical expertise for years to come, and develop India’s strategic autonomy,” MBDA said in its statement.
The upcoming MRO capability is expected to provide India with the ability to support the MICA missile inventory throughout the entirety of its operational service life. Defence experts note that indigenous sustainment infrastructure is increasingly becoming a critical component of military preparedness, particularly as modern weapon systems become more technologically complex and supply chains face geopolitical uncertainties.

The MICA missile serves as one of the principal beyond-visual-range and close-combat air-to-air weapons employed by the Indian Air Force. Integrated on both the Mirage-2000 fleet and the Rafale fighter aircraft, the missile has been central to India’s air combat capability in recent years. By establishing domestic overhaul and repair infrastructure, the IAF is expected to gain greater operational flexibility while lowering long-term sustainment costs.
The agreement also underscores the deepening strategic and industrial partnership between India and MBDA. The European missile maker has maintained a longstanding relationship with the Indian armed forces spanning more than five decades, supplying missile systems across multiple aircraft platforms and generations of combat aviation.
“MBDA today has two focuses: providing the highest performing missile technologies to the Indian armed forces, and secondly supporting Atmanirbhar Bharat as part of MBDA’s longstanding partnership strategy with India,” the company said.
The company further highlighted its commitment to India’s “Make in India” vision, positioning itself not merely as a supplier of advanced military hardware but also as a contributor to India’s defence industrial base and sovereign capability development.
“With a strong reputation as a reliable partner that has supported the Indian Air Force for over 50 years, MBDA understands the importance of operational capability and sovereignty to the IAF,” the statement added.
The latest announcement comes amid a broader trend within India’s defence sector aimed at localising maintenance and lifecycle support for major military platforms and weapon systems. Over the past few years, India has increasingly prioritised indigenous manufacturing, repair infrastructure, and technology transfer arrangements in major defence acquisitions to ensure operational independence and long-term sustainability.
Analysts say the MICA missile MRO initiative could serve as a model for future collaborations involving advanced missile systems and aerospace technologies, particularly as India continues to modernise its air force amid evolving regional security dynamics.
For the Indian Air Force, the agreement is expected to deliver immediate operational benefits while simultaneously building a strategic foundation for greater self-sufficiency in missile sustainment and lifecycle management over the coming decades.
