Nokia, blackned Partner for Development of Tactical Defence Networks: Helsinki, Finland & Heroldsberg, Germany – Nokia and blackned GmbH have announced a memorandum of understanding aimed at developing deployable tactical networks for the defence sector. The agreement seeks to combine Nokia’s 5G technology with blackned’s defence digitalization expertise to create mobile communication systems for military battlefield operations.
The collaboration will focus on integrating the product portfolios of both companies to design a deployable communication system. This system is intended to be customized for Germany’s defence requirements, with provisions for adaptability for international use.
The partnership will leverage Nokia’s 5G tactical communications technology and blackned’s software-based defence solutions, with the stated aim of integrating the platform with the Rheinmetall Battlesuite. Rheinmetall holds a 51 percent stake in blackned GmbH.

According to the companies, deployable tactical networks are mobile communication solutions designed for rapid deployment. These systems are intended to provide connectivity and data rates in various battlefield environments, supporting what is referred to as the Software Defined Defence paradigm. The stated purpose of these networks is to enhance situational awareness, expedite decision-making, and improve asset coordination.
Timo Zaiser, CTO at blackned GmbH, stated that the agreement with Nokia represents a step in their mission to advance innovation in defence digitalization. He added that the collaboration aims to provide tactical network solutions for modern defense.

Giuseppe Targia, Head of Space and Defence at Nokia, commented on the partnership, noting that their 5G technology will enable defense forces to deploy communication capabilities and share intelligence. He added that this is intended to provide customers with an advantage.
