IG Defence’s Kal Drone Completes Pokhran Trial: India’s push to develop indigenous long-range unmanned strike capabilities has received a boost with the successful completion of a trial of KAL, a long-range one-way attack drone developed by Indian defence technology company IG Defence.
The trial was conducted at the Pokhran Field Firing Range in Rajasthan and marks an important development milestone for the company’s efforts to build an indigenous unmanned platform capable of long-range operations.
KAL has been designed to operate in the increasingly important category of long-range one-way attack drones, systems that have attracted considerable attention because of their use in recent conflicts.
According to IG Defence, the trial provided an opportunity to validate the integration of several key elements of the platform, including its airframe, propulsion, avionics, navigation and mission architecture.
The company describes KAL as part of its broader effort to develop Indian-made technologies for an increasingly unmanned and contested battlefield.
What is a one-way attack drone?
A one-way attack drone is an unmanned aircraft designed to fly towards a designated target and strike it, rather than return to its launch point.
The concept has become particularly prominent during the Russia-Ukraine war, where Iranian-origin Shahed-136 and Russian Geran-2 systems have been used in long-range attacks.
Their use has demonstrated how relatively low-cost unmanned platforms can provide long-range strike options while also placing sustained pressure on air-defence systems.
The technology has since appeared in other theatres. Shahed-class systems have also been employed in the Middle East and in attacks involving maritime targets in the Red Sea.
This growing use has changed the way military planners view unmanned systems. Long-range drones are no longer limited to surveillance or tactical battlefield roles. They can also form part of broader strike campaigns, particularly where large numbers of relatively inexpensive platforms can be deployed.
What are KAL’s capabilities?
KAL has been designed around this emerging requirement.
IG Defence says the platform has a specified range of up to 1,000 kilometres and an endurance of between seven and eight hours. It is designed to carry a payload of up to 50kg and operate at an altitude of up to 5,000 metres above mean sea level.
One of the key features is its navigation architecture. KAL combines multi-band Global Navigation Satellite System technology with an inertial navigation system, or INS.
In simple terms, the combination is intended to allow the drone to navigate autonomously throughout its mission profile.
The platform is designed for precision engagement of designated targets, including infrastructure, radar installations, air-defence systems and other strategic targets, depending on its mission configuration and the relevant operational authorisations.
These characteristics place KAL within a category of unmanned systems where range, endurance, navigation and payload capacity are central to the platform’s intended role.
Why are long-range attack drones gaining importance?
The increasing use of Shahed-type systems has highlighted a wider change in military technology.
Modern conflicts have shown that long-range unmanned platforms can be used to conduct sustained strike campaigns while forcing opponents to devote air-defence resources to detecting and intercepting them.
The evolution of these systems has also demonstrated the importance of production capacity. Recent analysis of the Russia-Ukraine conflict has documented the rapid expansion of Shahed-type drone production and their growing role in long-range attacks.
For countries seeking greater strategic autonomy, this creates a requirement that goes beyond simply purchasing drones from abroad.
It means developing the ability to design, manufacture and maintain long-range unmanned systems domestically, while building an industrial ecosystem capable of producing them at scale.
This is the broader context in which IG Defence is positioning KAL.

An indigenous approach to unmanned strike
IG Defence says KAL has been developed indigenously across its major systems.
The Pokhran trial therefore represents more than a test of the aircraft itself. It provides a milestone for the integration of the different technologies required to make a long-range autonomous platform function as a complete system.
These include the airframe, propulsion, avionics, navigation and mission architecture.
The company says KAL forms part of its GRID STRIKE long-range precision-strike portfolio. It can also be integrated with IG Defence’s GRID Battle Management System, described by the company as an AI-powered C5ISRT architecture intended to coordinate unmanned platforms and battlefield information.
The central focus of KAL’s development, however, remains the creation of an indigenous long-range unmanned strike capability.

IG Defence’s wider drone portfolio
KAL is not being developed as an isolated programme.
IG Defence says it is working on a wider range of indigenous defence technologies covering several areas of unmanned and autonomous warfare.
Its portfolio includes interceptor drones, FPV combat drones, autonomous UAVs and counter-UAS systems, alongside electronic warfare technologies.
The company is also developing AI-enabled swarm technologies, tactical robotics and logistics drones.
This reflects the increasingly diverse role of unmanned systems in modern military operations. Drones can perform surveillance, attack, interception, electronic warfare and logistics functions, while counter-drone systems are being developed to detect and respond to the growing threat posed by unmanned aircraft.
What the Pokhran trial means for KAL
The successful trial does not by itself represent the completion of the entire development or operationalisation process. Rather, it marks an important validation point in the platform’s development.
For IG Defence, the test demonstrates progress towards integrating a long-range autonomous drone capable of carrying a significant payload and operating over extended distances.
Bodhisattwa Sanghapriya, Founder and CEO of IG Defence, described the successful Pokhran trial as a significant milestone for the company and for India’s pursuit of self-reliance in advanced defence technology.
He said recent conflicts had demonstrated that long-range one-way attack drones were becoming an important element of modern warfare, influencing approaches to precision strike, air defence and strategic deterrence.
Sanghapriya also said KAL had been designed around requirements including long range, autonomous operation, payload capability and scalable indigenous production.
For IG Defence, the stated objective goes beyond developing another unmanned aircraft. The company sees KAL as part of an effort to establish an Indian capability in a defence technology area that is gaining strategic importance internationally.
The Pokhran trial therefore represents another step in that effort. As warfare becomes increasingly shaped by autonomous platforms, precision systems and contested airspace, the development of indigenous long-range unmanned technologies is emerging as an important part of the wider transformation of modern defence capabilities.
