Airbus Integrates Quantum Systems C-UAS Interceptors Across Helicopter Fleet: BERLIN, Germany — The rapid proliferation of low-cost, high-impact uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) has fundamentally altered the landscape of modern warfare. As asymmetric drone threats increasingly dictate the terms of engagement on the battlefield, the global defence industry is racing to find agile, scalable solutions.

At the ILA Berlin 2026 airshow, European aerospace titan Airbus Helicopters and deep-tech pioneer Quantum Systems announced a landmark cooperation agreement aimed at turning military helicopters into formidable aerial defense nodes. The strategic partnership focuses on integrating Quantum Systems’ advanced counter-UAS (C-UAS) kinetic interceptors directly onto Airbus’ military helicopter portfolio, starting with the multi-role H145M.

The collaboration marks a critical evolution in European defense, shifting helicopters from traditional combat and transport assets into frontline counter-drone platforms capable of neutralizing sophisticated airborne threats in real time.

Securing the Skies from the Cockpit

For decades, military helicopters have operated under the assumption that their primary threats came from ground-based anti-aircraft systems or enemy fighter jets. Today, a swarm of off-the-shelf reconnaissance or one-way attack drones can compromise a mission before a helicopter even reaches its objective.

The agreement signed in Berlin seeks to level the playing field by putting counter-drone solutions directly into the hands of helicopter crews. By pairing Airbus’ robust airframes with Quantum Systems’ rapidly evolving interceptor capabilities—such as the STRILA interceptor drones—the partnership delivers a decisive advantage to armed forces operating in highly contested airspaces.

“At Airbus Helicopters, we are constantly exploring new frontiers in mission capabilities to bring real, decisive value to our customers,” said Stefan Thomé, Executive Vice President Programmes at Airbus Helicopters. “This agreement with Quantum Systems marks a crucial step forward in further expanding the operational spectrum of our military helicopters, ensuring that crews can effectively control the airspace against uncrewed threats.”

Thomé highlighted the H145M as the “ideal launching pad” for the initiative due to its advanced open system architecture, which allows for the rapid integration of third-party hardware and software, and its substantial growth potential.

The Transition of a Deep-Tech Prime

For Quantum Systems, a company traditionally recognized for its expertise in Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) data collection, this partnership cements its ambitious expansion into the kinetic and defensive weapon systems market.

“This cooperation demonstrates how Europe’s defence industry can combine complementary strengths to address emerging operational challenges,” noted Martin Karkour, Chief Revenue Officer at Quantum Systems. “Together, Airbus and Quantum Systems are advancing the integration of crewed and uncrewed capabilities to build a more resilient and effective defence ecosystem. Current developments show that aerial systems need answers to drone threats.”

As a self-described “deep-tech prime for the unmanned era,” Quantum Systems is leveraging its agile development cycles to meet the urgent tactical demands of modern conflict, providing rapid-response interceptors that can rebalance the economic calculus of air defense.

Innovation on Display: The Uncrewed U145

The physical manifestation of this cooperative vision was a focal point on the static display at ILA Berlin, where Airbus concurrently unveiled its highly anticipated U145—an entirely uncrewed, autonomous variant of the iconic H145 family.

Designed primarily for autonomous cargo delivery, firefighting, and surveillance, the full-scale U145 mockup was exhibited equipped with Quantum Systems’ C-UAS solution. The layout showcased a pylon beneath a small stub wing carrying Quantum Systems’ interceptor drones, demonstrating how future autonomous and optionally piloted variants will actively defend themselves and surrounding assets without requiring human pilots in the line of fire.

By combining the structural durability and power of the H145 platform with cutting-edge artificial intelligence and specialized counter-drone capabilities, the two companies are setting a new standard for crewed-uncrewed teaming (MUM-T) in Europe. The initiative not only protects vital military personnel and hardware but also reinforces European technological sovereignty at a time when strategic self-reliance is paramount.
