Govt approves Brahmos missiles for navy, recovery vehicle for Arjun tanks

The defence acquisition council, India’s nodal body for approving defence procurement, has cleared acquisition of defence hardware worth Rs. 3,000 crore.

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presided over the council’s Saturday meeting that cleared the procurement of made in India Brahmos missiles for Indian Navy’s two P1135.6 class frigates being built by Russia.

Earlier, government’s apex body for security related matters, the cabinet committee on security has cleared the procurement of four P1135.6 class ships from Russia.

Brahmos missiles manufactured by state owned defence manufacturers Brahoms Aerospace Limited, a joint venture between India’s DRDO and Russia NPO Mashinostroyenia, will be fitted on two of these four ships being built in Russia.

Defence Ministry said: “The indigenously designed BrahMos Missile is a tested and proven supersonic cruise missile and will form the primary weapon on-board these Ships.”

The defence acquisition council also approved the procurement of Armoured Recovery Vehicles (ARVs) for the Indian Army’s Main Battle Tank Arjun.

These ARVs are designed and Developed by DRDO and would be manufactured by public sector defence manufacturer Bharat Earth Movers Limited. These armored recovery vehicles (ARVs) will ensure efficient and speedy repair and recovery operations during combat.
