MoD Signs $79 Million Deal with MKU Limited for Advanced Night Sights for Indian Army’s Assault Rifles: New Delhi, October 15, 2025: In a significant step towards enhancing the operational capabilities of the Indian Army, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a contract worth $79 million (₹659.47 crore) for the procurement of advanced Night Sight (Image Intensifier) systems for the 7.62 x 51mm SIG 716 Assault Rifles. The agreement, finalized on October 15, 2025, involves a consortium led by MKU Ltd and Medbit Technologies Pvt Ltd. This cutting-edge technology is set to provide Indian soldiers with enhanced operational effectiveness during night operations, particularly by improving target acquisition in low-light conditions.
The advanced Night Sight system, which allows soldiers to engage targets at an effective range of up to 500 meters, even under starlit conditions, will significantly improve on the existing Passive Night Sights (PNS). These advancements will enable the Indian Army to fully utilize the extended range of the SIG 716 Assault Rifle, ensuring better precision and operational flexibility during night-time engagements. The new sight system is expected to offer a distinct advantage in combat scenarios, particularly when visibility is limited.
This procurement is categorized as a Buy (Indian-IDDM) case, with more than 51% of the components being sourced locally, aligning with the Indian government’s “Aatmanirbharta” (self-reliance) initiative in defense manufacturing. The contract is also expected to have a positive impact on India’s defense ecosystem, benefiting several MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) involved in the supply chain for components and raw materials needed for the manufacturing of these sophisticated systems.
