DRDO LRLACM Missile: In a major boost to India’s defense capabilities, the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully flight-tested its new Long Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LRLACM) on June 15, 2026.

The test took place from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island, located just off the coast of Odisha. According to defense officials, the trial was a complete success, meeting every single objective set by the engineering and military teams.

But what exactly is this missile, and why does this test matter so much? Let’s break it down.

What is the India LRLACM Missile?

The Long Range Land Attack Cruise Missile, or LRLACM, is a high-tech weapon designed to travel long distances at relatively low altitudes to strike targets on land. Unlike ballistic missiles, which fly high into space before dropping down on their targets, cruise missiles fly closer to the ground, often hugging the terrain to avoid enemy radar.

The “Long Range” part of its name means it can strike targets deep inside enemy territory, giving the Indian military a powerful tool for both deterrence and defense.

A Win for ‘Made in India’ Technology

One of the most important aspects of this successful test is that the LRLACM is entirely indigenous. This means it was designed, developed, and built right in India.

The project was led by the Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) based in Bengaluru, acting as the main laboratory. However, it wasn’t a solo effort. Various other DRDO laboratories and Indian private industry partners teamed up to create the missile’s complex internal sub-systems, from its propulsion to its guidance tech.

Building these systems locally reduces India’s reliance on foreign military imports and strengthens the country’s domestic defense manufacturing sector.

How the Test Went Down

The launch was closely watched by advanced tracking instruments—including radar, electro-optical tracking systems, and telemetry—deployed by the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur. These instruments captured real-time data to ensure the missile followed its exact path and performed as expected.

The event wasn’t just a win for the scientists; it was also a major moment for the people who will actually use the weapon. Senior officials from the DRDO were joined by representatives from the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force to witness the launch firsthand, signaling that the missile is being developed with multi-service operations in mind.

The successful test brought quick praise from the highest levels of government. Raksha Mantri (Defense Minister) Shri Rajnath Singh congratulated the entire DRDO team and their industry partners for achieving the milestone.

The activities during the launch were closely monitored by Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh, who serves as the Defence Secretary, Secretary of the Department of Defence (R&D), and the Chairman of DRDO. He expressed his pride in the team, noting that the success highlights India’s growing self-reliance in critical defense technologies.
