Greece opens Defence Exhibition Athens DEFEA

Defence Exhibition Athens (DEFEA-2021): Greek Minister of National Defence Nicos Panagiotopoulos Tuesday inaugurated the Defence Exhibition Athens (DEFEA) as scores of senior defence leaders, defence industry executives, diplomats attended the three-day prestigious defence exhibition in a Covid-free environment.

DEFEA 2021 is the first defence exhibition to be held in Greece after a decade. The three-day event jointly organised by the defence ministry, armed forces and industry associations attracted 315 exhibitors from 22 countries and more than 45 governmental and military delegations from 35 countries.

Deputy Minister Alkiviades Stefanis and the Chiefs of the General Staffs also attended the ceremony.

During the three days of the Exhibition, Minister Panagiotopoulos will have bilateral meetings with seven of his counterparts and specifically the Minister of Defence of Cyprus Charalambos Petrides; Matej Tonin, Defence Minister of Slovenia; Joao Gomes Cravinho, Defence Minister of Portugal; Lorenzo Guerini, Defence Minister of Italy; Sifet Prodzic of Bosnia Herzegovina; Radmila Shekerinshka of North Macedonia; and Juansher Butchulaze, Defence Minister of Georgia.

The Minister of National Defence of the Hellenic Republic will also have meeting with the Executive Director of EDA Jiri Sedivy.

Sedivy, as well as the Ministers of Defence of Greece, Cyprus Slovenia and Portugal will have a round table discussion about the defence initiatives of the EU, namely PESCO, CARD and EDP.

A series of conferences and informative events are scheduled for the three-day event.

The Minister of National Defence Nicos Panagiotopoulos hosted a “Ministerial Roundtable Discussion on the European Defence Initiatives”, during which EU Defence Ministers discussed the importance of the EU Defence Initiatives (PESCO, CARD, EDP) in promoting defence cooperation between the Member States.

A programme: “Workshop with Industry: Opportunities offered by EU Defence capability development tools” was also organised on Tuesday. This Workshop aimed at promoting the need for a capability-driven and competitive European Defence Technological and Industrial Base in the framework of the main EU Defence Initiatives.

On Wednesday July 14, the second day of the Exhibition, a conference will be organized by ROTA SA and SEKPY (Hellenic Manufacturers Of Defence Material Association on: “The Development of the Greek Defence Industry” with keynote speaker Adonis Georgiadis, Minister of Development and Investments.

On Wednesday, the Directorate of Defence Investments & Technological Research – General Directorate for Defence Investments & Armaments of the Hellenic Ministry of National Defence will also organize the “European Defence Fund (EDF) Info Day.
