The development was officially confirmed by the United States Embassy in New Delhi following the signing of a Letter of Offer and Acceptance. Valued at approximately USD 45.7 million, the procurement package includes over one hundred Javelin missile rounds, twenty-five lightweight command launch units, simulation systems, and necessary technical support. This contract moves the proposal from a cleared Foreign Military Sale notification by the US State Department into a finalized procurement process.
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor noted that the agreement highlights an expanding defence partnership between the two nations and sets the framework for deeper industrial collaboration. While the immediate acquisition fulfills an urgent tactical requirement for the Indian military, both governments are concurrently discussing long-term plans for domestic co-production. State-owned Bharat Dynamics Limited has previously explored manufacturing options with the Javelin Joint Venture, which brings together American defense contractors Lockheed Martin and RTX.
What is the Javelin ATGM System?
Manufactured by the Javelin Joint Venture (a RTX and Lockheed Martin JV) The Javelin is a shoulder-fired, medium-range anti-tank guided missile system designed to be operated independently by infantry personnel. Weighing approximately fifteen kilograms in total, the system consists of a reusable command launch unit and a missile packed inside a disposable launch tube.
The primary technological feature of the Javelin is its fire-and-forget capability. Equipped with a passive imaging-infrared seeker, the missile locks onto a target thermal signature before launch. Once fired, the missile guides itself to the target without requiring any further input or tracking from the operator. This allows infantry personnel to immediately change position or retreat to cover, minimizing exposure to enemy fire. Furthermore, the system utilizes a soft-launch mechanism that ejects the missile clear of the tube before igniting the main rocket motor, enabling operators to fire safely from enclosed spaces or urban structures.
