Leonardo Wins Italy Order for Long Range Radar Solutions: Rome, 18 December 2025 — Italian defence group Leonardo has signed a contract to develop and deliver the first four next-generation radars for Italy’s long-range ballistic defence, marking a major step forward in the country’s emerging Michelangelo Dome advanced integrated defence system.

The agreement, signed with the Italian defence authority TELEDIFE (Direzione Informatica Telematica e Tecnologie Avanzate), covers the development and supply of radar systems designed to counter long-range ballistic threats with ranges of up to 3,000 kilometres. It represents the second major milestone for the Michelangelo Dome programme since its official unveiling in November.

The contract follows the successful first qualification launch earlier this month of the Italian SAMP/T NG surface-to-air missile system, which is equipped with Leonardo’s latest-generation KRONOS Grand Mobile High Power radar sensor.

Under the agreement, Leonardo will supply both a Ground Based Radar (GBR) and a Mobile Long Range Radar (MLRR). The systems are based on fully digital AESA GaN (Active Electronically Scanned Array – Gallium Nitride) technology, enabling high efficiency and extended detection range. They are designed to provide advanced surveillance and early warning, accurate identification and tracking, and real-time updates of the tactical picture.

The radars will also be capable of cueing fire control radars and associated effectors, in line with the Michelangelo Dome’s open architecture and its emphasis on flexible asset integration across multidomain operational scenarios.

Leonardo said the combination of digital AESA GaN technology and advanced operational capabilities positions the new radars among the most advanced sensor systems in Europe. With the Michelangelo Dome programme, Italy is set to become the first European country to field a nationally integrated air and missile defence capability specifically designed to counter emerging long-range ballistic threats.
