India and Russia’s Rostec Corporation sign deal for Tunguska Anit Aircraft System.
New Delhi, March 27, 2026 — The Ministry of Defence has signed two major defence contracts worth approximately $91.3 million USD (IN 858 crore), aimed at strengthening India’s air defence systems and maritime surveillance capabilities. The agreements were formalized at Kartavya Bhawan-2 in New Delhi on Friday.
Strengthening Air Defence with Tunguska Systems
A significant portion of the deal—valued at around $47.3 million USD (₹445 crore)—focuses on the procurement of the Tunguska Air Defence Missile System for the Indian Army. The contract was signed with JSC Rosoboronexport, Russia’s state arms exporter, reinforcing long-standing defence ties between India and Russia.
The agreement was concluded in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. Officials stated that the Tunguska systems will significantly enhance India’s layered air defence architecture, providing protection against a wide range of aerial threats including aircraft, drones, and cruise missiles.
This acquisition is expected to fill critical gaps in short-range air defence and improve battlefield responsiveness, particularly in high-threat environments.

Indigenous Push for Maritime Aircraft Maintenance
The second contract, valued at approximately $43.9 million USD (₹413 crore), covers the Depot Level Inspection of the Indian Navy’s fleet of P-8I Long-Range Maritime Reconnaissance Aircraft.
This agreement has been signed with Boeing India Defense Private Ltd, a wholly owned Indian subsidiary of Boeing, under the government’s “Buy Indian” category, ensuring 100% indigenous content. The deal aims to establish and sustain in-country Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) capabilities for the P-8I fleet.
Senior defence officials highlighted that this move aligns with India’s broader push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing under initiatives like Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India. By localizing maintenance operations, the contract is expected to reduce dependence on foreign facilities, improve aircraft availability, and generate domestic technical expertise.

Strategic Implications
Together, these deals underscore India’s dual-track approach to defence modernization: strengthening international partnerships while simultaneously boosting domestic capabilities. The Tunguska procurement highlights continued strategic cooperation with Russia, while the P-8I maintenance contract reflects India’s growing emphasis on indigenous defence infrastructure.
Defence analysts note that such balanced investments are critical as India seeks to address evolving security challenges across both land and maritime domains.
With these agreements, the government signals its continued commitment to modernizing the armed forces while fostering a more self-reliant defence ecosystem.
