New Delhi, 30 Dec 2025 – The Ministry of Defence on Tuesday signed contracts totalling ₹4,666 crore (about $518 million) for key defence procurements, in a bid to modernise India’s ground and naval forces. The agreements were formalised in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh at South Block, New Delhi.

Close Quarter Battle (CQB) Carbine Deal — ₹2,770 Crore (~$308 Million)

Under the first agreement, contracts worth ₹2,770 crore (approximately $308 million) were signed with Bharat Forge Ltd and PLR Systems Pvt Ltd for the supply of over 4.25 lakh Close Quarter Battle (CQB) Carbines and associated accessories for the Indian Army and Indian Navy.

Officials highlighted that this acquisition marks a major milestone in equipping frontline infantry with modern, indigenous weaponry, replacing older systems with advanced, compact firearms designed for high efficiency in close-combat environments. The deal is also seen as a boost to the government’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, fostering domestic manufacturing, job creation, and participation by Indian MSMEs in defence production.

Heavy Weight Torpedoes for Navy — ₹1,896 Crore (~$210 Million)

The second contract, valued at ₹1,896 crore (around $210 million), was signed with WASS Submarine Systems S.R.L., Italy for the procurement and integration of 48 Heavy Weight Torpedoes and related systems for the Kalvari Class submarines (Project-75) of the Indian Navy.

These advanced torpedoes are expected to significantly enhance the undersea combat capabilities of the six submarines in the class. Delivery is scheduled to commence in April 2028 and conclude by early 2030, aligning with broader naval modernisation goals.

Defence Modernisation Outlook

The deals form part of a larger spending push by the Ministry of Defence — in the 2025-26 financial year, capital contracts worth ₹1,82,492 crore (USD 20.26 Billion) were signed for upgrading the armed forces’ platforms and equipment.

Defence analysts noted that the combination of indigenous manufacturing and selective foreign partnerships reflects India’s dual strategy: strengthening self-reliance while quickly fielding cutting-edge systems where needed.

Total contract value: ₹4,666 crore ≈ $518 million.

CQB Carbines: ₹2,770 crore ≈ $308 million.
