Fincantieri’s U212 NFS Submarine: Muggiano, Italy — March 2026 — Fincantieri has marked a major milestone in Italy’s naval modernization programme with the keel-laying of the first U212NFS (Near Future Submarine), destined for the Italian Navy.
The ceremony took place at the company’s historic Muggiano shipyard and forms part of a wider programme covering the construction of four next-generation submarines, along with the development of their associated logistic support systems. The programme is managed and entrusted to OCCAR (Organisation Conjointe de Coopération en matière d’Armement), the international body responsible for overseeing cooperative defence initiatives.
Delivery of the first U212NFS submarine is scheduled for 2029.
A Generational Leap in Underwater Capability
The U212NFS class represents a significant evolution from its predecessor, the U212A, combining greater design maturity with an expanded share of domestically developed technologies and enhanced integration of onboard systems.
Among the key innovations introduced by Italian industry are a lithium-ion propulsion battery and a new-generation combat system. Together, these upgrades are expected to deliver substantial improvements in stealth, endurance, operational efficiency, and cyber resilience — all critical factors in modern underwater warfare.
The lithium-ion battery system, in particular, marks a step change in submerged performance, offering extended operational endurance and faster recharge cycles compared to traditional solutions. Enhanced digital architecture and combat management capabilities will also strengthen interoperability and mission flexibility.

Strengthening Italy’s Industrial Base
Beyond its operational significance, the U212NFS programme plays a strategic role in safeguarding and advancing Italy’s naval industrial know-how. By increasing the share of nationally developed components and systems, the programme reinforces the domestic supply chain and consolidates technological expertise across multiple high-value sectors.
Fincantieri emphasised that the initiative contributes to maintaining Italy’s competitive edge in submarine construction, an area requiring specialised engineering capabilities and tightly integrated industrial coordination.
The Muggiano shipyard — with more than a century of activity and over 100 submarines built — remains a cornerstone of Italy’s underwater shipbuilding heritage. The site has long been regarded as a benchmark facility for the country’s submarine fleet and continues to serve as a centre of excellence for complex naval construction.

Fincantieri: A Global Shipbuilding Leader
Fincantieri is among the world’s largest shipbuilding groups and the only player operating across all high-complexity segments of the marine industry. The company leads in the construction of cruise ships, naval vessels, and offshore platforms, and maintains extensive expertise in underwater systems through its integrated industrial structure spanning commercial, defence, and dual-use sectors.
The group has increasingly internalised high value-added technologies, strengthening its capabilities in mechatronics, electronics, digital naval systems, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence. It also provides a broad portfolio of after-sales services, including logistics and fleet support.
With more than 230 years of history and over 7,000 ships built, Fincantieri operates a global production network of 18 shipyards and employs more than 23,000 people worldwide. Italy remains the centre of its technological and managerial expertise, directly employing over 12,000 workers domestically and supporting approximately 90,000 indirect jobs.
As construction advances toward the planned 2029 delivery, the U212NFS programme underscores Italy’s commitment to sustaining a technologically advanced and sovereign underwater capability. For Fincantieri, the keel-laying not only marks the physical beginning of a new submarine but also signals the continuation of a longstanding national tradition in submarine design and construction — now entering its next generation.
