SMPP Secures Twin Indian Army Contracts for Protective Gear: New Delhi – July 2, 2025 – SMPP, an Indian manufacturer of defense equipment, has been awarded two contracts by the Indian Army. The contracts, issued under Emergency Procurement 5 on June 22, 2025, are for the supply of Bulletproof Jackets and Advanced Ballistic Helmets. The total value of these orders exceeds ₹300 crore (approximately $36.14 million USD).

Under these contracts, SMPP is slated to deliver 27,700 bulletproof jackets and 11,700 Advanced Ballistic Helmets to the Indian Army.

Shiv Chand Kansal, Chairman and Managing Director of SMPP, commented on the new contract, stating, “We conduct our business with the motto to ‘protect those who protect us’ and a vision to lead the way in equipping armed forces with advanced technological solutions.”

The bulletproof jackets provided under the contract feature dynamic load distribution and a quick-release system. The Advanced Ballistic Helmet is described as providing protection against AK-47 fired hard steel core ammunition.

Ashish Kansal, Director and CEO of SMPP, noted the company’s position in the personal protection market in India, citing a reported market share of over 90% (according to a 1Lattice report). He attributed this to the company’s focus on research and development, which has resulted in over 17 patent filings and 10 granted patents.

SMPP operates a manufacturing facility for personal protection products in Palwal, Haryana. The company produced its first ballistic-grade boron carbide plate in 2008 using in-house developed technology.

Since 2014, it has maintained a continuous order from a global aircraft manufacturer. Previous contracts include a 2018 order for 186,138 bullet-resistant jackets of Level III and III+ protection for the Indian Army, which was reportedly delivered ahead of schedule. The company has also supplied specialized products such as Ballistic Helmets for Sikh Soldiers and Ballistic Shields designed to stop armor-piercing bullets.

The Indian defense manufacturing sector is undergoing transformation, driven by government initiatives to increase indigenous defense solutions. Local manufacturers are expanding their capabilities to meet the requirements of the Indian Armed Forces. SMPP has positioned itself as a contributor to India’s ‘Aatmanirbharta’ (self-reliance) in defense production.
