MARTE: Europe’s main battle tank: Brussels, March 25, 2026 — Europe’s defence industry has taken a major step toward consolidating its technological sovereignty and strategic autonomy with the MARTE project — the Main ARmoured Tank of Europe. Funded by the European Defence Fund (EDF), MARTE represents far more than a traditional military technology initiative; it is a cornerstone for ensuring Europe’s relevance in high-intensity land warfare in the decades to come.
Launched in December 2024, MARTE brings together 11 European member states — Germany (project lead), Belgium, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Spain, and Sweden — in an unprecedented effort to design Europe’s future Main Battle Tank (MBT). The initiative aims to create a complete system capable of dominating future battlefields while harmonizing the diverse operational requirements of its participating nations.
“The MARTE project is not only about developing a tank. It is about developing Europe’s capacity to defend itself in a rapidly evolving strategic environment,” said a spokesperson from MARTE ARGE GbR, the project’s coordinating joint venture between KNDS Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG and Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH. “Our goal is ambitious: achieving Preliminary Design Review (PDR) maturity within just 24 months.”
Europe’s Main Battle Tank: Year of Tangible Progress
One year after the official kick-off, the MARTE consortium has marked a decisive midterm milestone, confirming substantial progress across technical, organizational, and strategic dimensions. Guided by the MARTE Core Team — consisting of MARTE ARGE GbR, KNDS Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG, Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH, Leonardo SPA (Italy), Indra Sistemas SA (Spain), and SAAB AB (Sweden) — the consortium successfully completed multiple technical work packages and submitted key deliverables to the European Commission according to schedule.
Among the achievements is the completion of a comprehensive Concept of Operations and a full set of requirements for a future MBT system. Under SAAB AB’s leadership, consortium partners worked closely with participating Ministries of Defence to consolidate and harmonize operational requirements, ensuring that the future tank system meets the needs of the European armed forces that will operate it.
In parallel, Indra Sistemas S.A. spearheaded a market survey evaluating the availability, technological readiness, and performance capabilities of critical technologies and subsystems across the European defence industry. These insights provide a solid foundation for selecting components and solutions that will define MARTE’s cutting-edge capabilities.

MARTE: Strong Foundations for the Next Phase
All submitted deliverables have been formally approved by the European Commission, paving the way for the next stage: design and architecture development of the MBT system and its subsystems. KNDS Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG, Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH, and Leonardo SPA will take the lead in driving these core activities.
The project’s General Assembly, held in November 2025 in San Sebastián, Spain, brought together all consortium members and key stakeholders at the program’s halfway point. The assembly offered a platform to present achieved milestones, align ongoing activities with the roadmap to Preliminary Design Review, and reaffirm MARTE’s status as one of the most consequential defence programs under the EDF framework.
Europe’s Strategic Leap
MARTE’s achievements underscore the growing strength of European industrial collaboration in defence innovation. By combining the expertise of industry leaders with the strategic input of participating Ministries of Defence, the project embodies a decisive investment in Europe’s technological sovereignty.
Experts describe MARTE not just as a vehicle program but as a statement of intent: Europe is committed to maintaining independent, cutting-edge capabilities in high-intensity land combat. The success of this project could redefine the continent’s defence posture for decades, ensuring that European forces remain technologically advanced, operationally effective, and strategically autonomous.
As the MARTE consortium moves into the next phase of system design and integration, expectations remain high. With clear milestones, strong industrial partnerships, and a united European vision, MARTE is poised to become a symbol of both military and technological leadership in Europe’s defence landscape.
