Rajnath Singh Dedicates 125 Landmark Border Infrastructure Projects in Ladakh: Ladakh, India – December 7, 2025: In an unprecedented move, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh dedicated 125 strategic infrastructure projects to the nation, marking the largest-ever simultaneous inauguration by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) in its history. The event, held in Ladakh, showcased India’s unwavering commitment to strengthening its border infrastructure and enhancing connectivity across some of the country’s most remote and strategically critical regions.
Spanning two Union Territories—Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir—and seven states—Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, West Bengal, and Mizoram—the projects include 28 roads, 93 bridges, and four miscellaneous developments, collectively valued at an estimated US$ 600 million (₹5,000 crore). This monumental effort is the highest-value inauguration in the BRO’s history, further solidifying its vital role in India’s national security framework.

Pioneering Infrastructure for Border Security and Connectivity
At the heart of these projects is the strategic Shyok Tunnel, part of the Darbuk-Shyok-Daulat Beg Oldie (DSDBO) road, which will dramatically improve access to one of India’s most challenging and high-altitude areas. Built through rugged, snow-prone terrain, the 920-metre Shyok Tunnel ensures year-round, reliable connectivity, even during harsh winters, when the region experiences extreme temperatures, snowstorms, and avalanches. Its completion underscores India’s commitment to bolstering military mobility and rapid deployment capabilities in critical border areas.
Speaking at the event, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh described the new infrastructure as an important step in realising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a Viksit Bharat (developed India). “These projects are not just roads and bridges; they represent lifelines for our national security, economic growth, and disaster management. They bring remote villages and forward military posts closer to the national mainstream,” he said.

The Shyok Tunnel and other projects will significantly enhance India’s military capabilities, facilitating better mobility for the Armed Forces, swift transportation of logistics, and bolstered disaster response in border areas. “Strong connectivity ensures better coordination between the armed forces and civil administration, which was key to the historic success of Operation Sindoor,” the Defence Minister noted. The operation, launched in response to a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, demonstrated India’s military capability to respond effectively and swiftly, thanks in part to the strengthened infrastructure.
“Such massive operations are only possible when there is a seamless flow of communication and connectivity between military personnel, civil authorities, and the people in border regions. This collaboration—the mutualism between all stakeholders—is what makes us unique in the world,” he added, highlighting the critical role of border communities in ensuring the success of such operations.

The Defence Minister also virtually inaugurated the Galwan War Memorial in Ladakh, commemorating the bravery and sacrifice of the Indian Armed Forces personnel who lost their lives during the Galwan Valley clashes. This memorial stands as a symbol of national pride and a tribute to the enduring commitment of India’s soldiers in protecting the nation’s borders.

The development of robust infrastructure in border areas not only strengthens national security but also stimulates local economies. “These infrastructure projects will lead to an increase in tourism, employment opportunities, and faith in development and democracy in the border regions,” said Singh. “The Indian government, together with the Armed Forces and organisations like the BRO, is working diligently to ensure the holistic development of our border areas.”
Acknowledging the critical role of infrastructure in national economic growth, the Defence Minister pointed to India’s impressive GDP growth rate of 8.2% in Q2 of 2025-26. “Our economy continues to grow despite the challenges posed by various regional conflicts and global crises. Strong infrastructure and communication systems are integral to both our national security and our economic prosperity,” he emphasised.

The BRO has also been at the forefront of technological innovation in defence infrastructure, with a growing emphasis on indigenous solutions under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiative. Rajnath Singh particularly lauded the BRO for its successful adoption of indigenously developed Class-70 modular bridges. These bridges, designed and manufactured in India, have been deployed at several forward locations along India’s borders. This milestone not only enhances the country’s defence capabilities but also exemplifies India’s growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
“The success of these modular bridges is a clear testament to how indigenous technology is transforming our infrastructure development in strategically significant areas,” said the Defence Minister.

Record Budget and Future Aspirations
The significant strides made by the BRO in strengthening India’s border infrastructure are reflected in the record budgetary allocation for the organisation. For the fiscal year 2024-25, the BRO’s expenditure reached an all-time high of US$ 2.02 billion (₹16,690 crore), with an ambitious target of US$ 2.25 billion (₹18,700 crore) set for FY 2025-26. This financial commitment underscores the government’s confidence in the BRO’s capabilities and its vital role in national security.
Rajnath Singh highlighted the remarkable growth in India’s defence production over the past decade, with India’s defence manufacturing sector now valued at US$ 18.5 billion (₹1.51 lakh crore), up from US$ 6.1 billion (₹46,000 crore) in 2014. Additionally, India’s defence exports have surged from less than US$ 130 million (₹1,000 crore) a decade ago to nearly US$ 3.2 billion (₹24,000 crore) today, marking a significant shift towards a more self-reliant defence industry.
