DRDO’s Akash-NG Missile: India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully completed the User Evaluation Trials (UET) of the Akash-NG missile system, marking a major step forward in enhancing the country’s air defense capabilities. The trials, conducted over several days, involved the interception of a variety of aerial targets across different altitudes and ranges, including low-altitude near-boundary and long-range high-altitude scenarios.

The Akash-NG missile, an upgraded version of the previous Akash missile system, is a state-of-the-art, indigenous air defense system designed to target a wide range of aerial threats. The missile is equipped with a homegrown RF seeker and propelled by a solid rocket motor, giving it the precision and speed necessary to counter modern aerial threats such as enemy aircraft, drones, and missiles.

During the trials, Akash-NG successfully demonstrated its capability to intercept multiple aerial threats, showcasing its ability to function effectively in various combat environments. The Multi-Function Radar (MFR), Command and Control Unit, and Missile Launch Vehicle (MLV)—all crucial components of the system—were tested and performed flawlessly. These systems have been developed by various DRDO laboratories in collaboration with Indian industries, further highlighting the nation’s growing self-reliance in defense technologies.

A Major Leap for India’s Air Defense

The successful completion of the UET is a critical milestone for both the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the DRDO, as it paves the way for the induction of the Akash-NG missile into the Indian armed forces. Senior scientists from DRDO and user representatives from the Indian Air Force (IAF) witnessed the trials, underscoring the importance of this achievement for India’s defense modernization efforts.

The Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, congratulated the DRDO, IAF, and Indian industries for their successful collaboration on the Akash-NG missile system. He stated, “The successful completion of the User Evaluation Trials will significantly enhance the air defense capabilities of the Indian Air Force, strengthening India’s security posture in the region.”

Strengthening India’s Air Defense Network

The Akash-NG missile system is a vital addition to India’s air defense network, as it complements existing defense systems and adds a critical layer of protection against evolving aerial threats. With a focus on indigenous development, the system reinforces the country’s growing capabilities in defense technology, reducing reliance on foreign imports.

The missile system’s development has been a testament to India’s commitment to self-sufficiency in defense, as it integrates sophisticated technologies and features that enhance its overall performance. As the trials demonstrated, the Akash-NG missile is capable of targeting high-speed, maneuverable aircraft and is effective against both high-altitude threats and low-altitude, near-boundary intrusions—key capabilities required for the defense of India’s borders.

A Future Ready for Defense Challenges

Secretary of the Department of Defence Research and Development and Chairman of DRDO,  Dr Samir V Kamat, also expressed his appreciation for the success of the flight tests, stating that it was a momentous achievement for DRDO and the Indian defense sector. He emphasized that the successful trials had paved the way for the induction of the Akash-NG missile into the Indian armed forces, enhancing the IAF’s ability to counter a wide range of aerial threats.

As the Akash-NG missile prepares for induction, the completion of the User Evaluation Trials reinforces India’s indigenous defense capabilities, marking a new chapter in the country’s efforts to modernize its armed forces and protect its borders.
