Vienna, 13 February 2026: The Hellenic Navy has signed a contract to procure ship-based Camcopter S-100 Unmanned Air Systems (UAS) for deployment aboard its Frégate de Défense et d’Intervention (FDI) Belharra-class frigates — HS Kimon, HS Nearchos and HS Formion.

The first of these vessels, HS Kimon, which arrived in Greece in January 2026, will be equipped with the Camcopter S-100 in spring 2026. An additional system will be operated from land for training purposes and to enhance operator proficiency. Training of the initial Greek Camcopter S-100 crews is expected to conclude in spring 2026.

The remaining systems will be deployed aboard HS Nearchos and HS Formion. HS Nearchos is scheduled for delivery in late 2026, while HS Formion is expected to arrive in early 2027. The frigates, built by France’s Naval Group, are pre-fitted for integration of the Camcopter S-100, enabling swift installation and rapid operational induction.

Equipped with a Wescam MX-10 electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) camera gimbal and an Overwatch Imaging PT-8 Oceanwatch sensor, the S-100 systems are expected to significantly enhance the Hellenic Navy’s operational reach. The unmanned platforms will support missions including maritime security, search and rescue, environmental monitoring, control of Greece’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), and anti-submarine warfare.

Hans Georg Schiebel, Chairman of the Schiebel Group, expressed pride in the selection of the S-100 by the Hellenic Navy. He highlighted the system’s proven maritime performance, endurance and payload flexibility, noting that it would provide commanders with expanded situational awareness and strengthen the operational capabilities of the Navy’s surface fleet.

About the Camcopter S-100

The Camcopter S-100 is an operationally proven unmanned air system designed for both military and civilian missions. The vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) platform does not require prepared runways or launch infrastructure, allowing operations from confined ship decks and remote land locations.

Capable of operating day and night and in adverse weather conditions, the system offers beyond line-of-sight capability out to 200 km (108 nautical miles) over land and sea. Its carbon fibre and titanium fuselage supports multiple payload configurations and endurance combinations, with a service ceiling of 5,500 metres (18,000 feet).

In a typical configuration, the S-100 carries a 34 kg payload for up to 10 hours and runs on aviation gasoline (AVGas) or JP-5 heavy fuel. High-definition imagery from onboard payloads is transmitted in real time to the control station. The system can operate via GPS waypoint navigation or manual control and retains the ability to function in GPS-denied environments, with missions managed through an intuitive graphical user interface.

Backed by Schiebel’s training and customer support services, the S-100 continues to expand its footprint in global naval and security operations.
