India unveils draft Defence Production and Export Promotion Policy 2020

Defence Production Policy DPEPP 2020: India Monday unveiled the draft Defence Production and Export Promotion Policy 2020 with the aim to make the country a defence power house by achieving the defence manufacturing target of $25 billion (Rs 1.75 lakh crores) and weapons export worth $5 billion (Rs 35,000 crore) by 2025.

India’s draft Defence Production and Export Promotion Policy 2020 (DPEPP 2020) emphasises on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flagship scheme Atma Nirbhar Bharat (Self Reliant India) to make the country self-reliant in critical sectors including defence.

“The draft production and export promotion policy is aimed at developing ‘a dynamic, robust and competitive’ defence industry, including aerospace and shipbuilding, to cater to the needs of the Indian armed forces with quality products,” the ministry of defence said in a statement.

The MoD said the new framework is aimed at positioning India among the leading nations in defence and aerospace sectors.

The policy will provide a focused, structured and significant thrust to the defence production capabilities in the country, said the defence ministry.

The new policy will focus on domestic design and development of cutting edge weapon systems, promoting export of defence products and become part of the global defence value chains.

The new defence production policy also aims to make the country a hub for research and innovation in defence sector by promoting generation of Intellectual Property Rights.

  7.     Creation of Quality Assurance and Testing Infrastructure

  8.     Promotion of Defence Exports

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has released draft policy for stakeholders’ input.
