Setback to India’s pilot training programme: IAF’s MiG-21 trainer aircraft crashes in North India

Indian Air Force Mig 21 Crash: In an incident that highlights the urgency of replacing India’s Mig-21 fighters, a type 69 Mig 21 trainer aircraft of Indian Air Force crashed near Gwalior Airbase in North India. However, both the pilots were able to eject safely. The Russian manufactured trainder aircraft was on a routine mission and had taken off from Gwalior Air Force station at around 10 am in the morning.

Aircraft crashed at approximate distance of 6 nautical miles while on approach for landing.

“Both the Pilots ejected safely and were picked up by rescue Helicopter,” said Indian Air Force in a statement.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh spoke to Air Chief Marshal, BS Dhanoa regarding the MiG-21 trainer crash near Gwalior.

He also enquired about the condition of both the pilots who had ejected successfully.

A Court of Inquiry has been ordered to investigate the cause of accident.
