Bipin Rawat takes over as Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee

Indian Army: Chief of Army Staff General Bipin Rawat Friday took over as the Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC). He received the baton from outgoing Air Force Chief Air Marshal BS Dhanoa in New Delhi in a brief ceremony.

As the next Chairman COSC, General Rawat’s role will be crucial in operationalising the appointment of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), as announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day Speech on August 15 this year.

“It is aimed at enhancing the tri-service integration, stimulate simultaneous growth of the services, rapid operationalisation and synchronisation of modern war fighting capabilities to ensure that the Armed Forces are well aligned to the future,” said the defence ministry in a statement.

General Bipin Rawat has more than four decades experience in military service with vast operational and staff exposure.

As the Chief of Army Staff, he has been a member of COSC since January 2017.

During his tenure in COSC, the Committee has deliberated on a number of diverse issues ranging from operations, training and administration, with an aim to enhance jointmanship and integration.

“General Bipin Rawat, with his foresight and professional acumen, has contributed immensely to the committee with his non-partisan views on critical issues,” said the ministry of defence.

The outgoing Chairman COSC, Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa has long operational and flying experience across the entire spectrum of fighter aircrafts of the Indian Air Force.

He has been at the helm of the issues related to developing close coordination of the three branches of Indian military since his appointment as Chairman, COSC on May 31 this year.

“Under the stewardship Air Marshal BS Dhanoa, the Services progressed jointmanship and integration on a number of fronts in synchronisation with the motto ‘Victory through Jointness’,” said the ministry of defence in a statement.
